Prof Spahr is Head of Discipline Restorative and Reconstructive Dentistry and Subject Area Periodontics as well as Deputy Head of School at The University of Sydney Dental School. He is also Head of the Department Periodontics at the Sydney Dental Hospital.

Axel is the former Head of Periodontics at the University of Ulm in Germany and has worked at various international universities and research facilities. He has additional training in microbiology, molecular biology, extensive experience in basic science research, animal research and clinical research. Prof. Spahr’s research interest includes periodontal regeneration, bone regeneration, periodontitis and systemic diseases, antimicrobial therapy as well as dental implants and peri-implant diseases. He has led large externally funded research projects and is collaborating with leading international research groups and companies in the field of periodontology, implantology and bone regeneration. He is the author of numerous publications in international peer-reviewed dental and medical journals, book chapters and has presented his work at professional conferences worldwide. Prof. Spahr is a board registered periodontal specialist, he works part-time in an established specialist periodontal and implant practice in Sydney and is the past President of the Periodontal Research Group of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR). He is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI), the International College of Dentists (ICD), and the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA).

Dr Iyer has a continued passion for surgery and periodontics. She graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1992 and commenced her practice Grandstand Dental Care in 1998 with a strong periodontal focus. Dr Iyer has been surgically placing and restoring implants for many years after receiving formal training in Implant Dentistry with the Australian Society of Implant Dentistry in 2005, her Masters in Oral Implantology from Frankfurt University and a Masters in Periodontics from the International Medical College Germany. She is also a Diplomate at the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (DICOI, USA). Dr Iyer has a real passion for working with patients to achieve the best possible comprehensive outcomes. Prof Meyers is a general dental practitioner and an honorary professor at The University of Queensland School of Dentistry. Over the last thirty-five years, he has been involved in dental research, clinical dentistry, private practice, university and hospital-based dental clinics. He is fellow of the International College of Dentists, Academy of Dentistry International, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.
Among his previous positions are the inaugural Colgate Chair of Dental General Practice Dentistry, Chief Dental Officer for Queensland Health, and President of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Dental Association. In January 2017 he commenced in the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Dental Association (Queensland).
Throughout his career as an academic, and as a clinical general dental practitioner, Ian Meyers has developed extensive experience in comprehensive patient care, diagnosis and management of worn and broken down dentition, geriatric and aged care dentistry, adhesive restorative dentistry and dental materials, and the management of patients through minimum intervention dentist.

Andrew is a Lecturer in Dental Hygiene working for the Newly minted Faculty of Medicine of Health, School of Dentistry. He works with both the Bachelor of Oral Health (BOH) and the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) programs since August 2015.

He is responsible primarily for the education of Periodontal instrumentation/screening and Oral Hygiene instruction education for both the BOH1 and DMD1&2 year levels. He supervises the clinical practice of the final year BOH3 students (Dental Hygiene stream) and also the initial Clinical Periodontal treatment provided by DMD2 students. From 2017 he was appointed as a Unit of Study Co-coordinator for BOH1 students. He is responsible also for the education/appointment of Clinical Educators for DMD1&2 Periodontics department.
Prior to attaining the role of Lecturer he has been associated with the University of Sydney as a Clinical Educator for the Bachelor of Oral Health program (BOH3) part-time between 2011 and 2015.
Andrew still works in private practice on Saturdays and has a special interest in providing caring treatment for HIV and Hep C positive patients. He undertakes volunteer oral hygiene education sessions for various HIV and HEP C positive groups from diverse backgrounds and age groups. He has worked with ACON and Positive Life NSW, Australia.

He has approximately 25 years’ clinical experience first qualifying as a Dental Therapist in QLD, Australia in 1993 and then as a Dental Hygienist in London, UK in 1998. He ratified his Australian and U.K education in Switzerland with the Swiss red cross and attained the protected title of “Dip. Dental Hygienist of Higher Education”. He has worked in Townsville, Brisbane, London and Zurich. He has been based in Sydney for 12 years now.

He currently has two educational research articles close to publication and upon completion of his Masters in Education at the end of 2019 looks to embark on more Oral Hygiene Product focused research under the supervision of Professor Axel Spahr.

Sahil is a Dental therapist/hygienist who has been practising in private clinic since 2012. Sahil graduated from the University of Sydney and further completed his Graduate Certificate in Oral Health Science from the University of Adelaide to expand his skills in adult restorative dentistry.
Since graduation, Sahil has completed numerous continuous professional development courses to update his skills both clinically and professionally. In 2014, Sahil completed his Mini-residency in Snoring, Sleep Apnoea and TMJ Disorders and he further pursued his interest by enrolling in Masters of Sleep medicine from the University of Sydney. Sahil has recently completed his Certification in Oral Myology from Graduate School of Behavioral Sciences (USA), graduating as a Certified Orofacial myology specialist. Sahil works closely with a multidisciplinary team at the Institute of Sleep medicine in detection and screening of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
Along with working in private practice, Sahil also teaches at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Sydney as a Clinical educator. He is also a founder of a dental education app called Mydental health, which enables patients to take responsibility for their oral health while at home unsupervised. Sahil is the Director of NSW Dental Hygiene Association of Australia (DHAA) and constantly attends professional development courses to expand on his current skills. Sahil takes pride in his work and has a special interest in the field of Dental sleep medicine.

Tabitha has 22 years’ experience in the dental industry. She graduated from Newcastle University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Oral Health and has since worked in private practice and as a dental educator at Sydney University.

Tabitha has a passion for community dentistry, preventative care and implant maintenance. She has volunteered clinically both within Australia and overseas and volunteers on a regular basis for the Dental Hygienists Association of Australia (DHAA). She is the current DHAA National Vice President, Northern Territory Director and Chair of Continuing Education nationally. Implant maintenance is her passion and Tabitha has travelled extensively overseas to obtain more knowledge on the subject including the Malo Clinic in Portugal. She is currently undertaking her Implant Maintenance certification in Washington DC, USA.

Tabitha is currently working in private practice in the Northern Territory and has just started her Master’s in Public Health at Charles Darwin University. She also splits her time working as a Clinical Educator for EMS Oceania, helping to pass on her knowledge and passion to ‘keep implants for life’.

Dr Barker graduated from dental school with Honours at the University of Adelaide in 2004. He worked in government and private practice for a number of years before completing a Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry, specialising in Periodontology at Griffith University in 2014.

Chris was awarded a grant from the Australian Periodontology Research Foundation for his doctoral research which was an investigation of bone and modifying factors of bone resorption and bone production. He is an admitted fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and has completed the Long Surgical Course Certification from Implant Team International (ITI).

He has been a clinical instructor at Griffith University and he is a member of the Australian Society of Periodontology (ASP), Queensland branch, the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP), International Team for Implantology (ITI), the Australian Osseointegration Society (AOS) and the Australian Dental Association (ADA).

Dr Wendy Gill graduated from UWA in 1994 and spent 9 years in general practice before completing her Master’s Degree in Periodontology in 2006. Wendy obtained her Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (Perio) in the same year and now maintains a specialist periodontal practice in West Perth.

She is a previous president of the Australian Society of Periodontology (WA), a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology, AOS member and member of numerous dental groups.

Wendy co-ordinates a local ITI Study Club and is on the council for the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP). She lectures locally and nationally on periodontal and dental implant topics.

Dr Sal Shahidi graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Science and a Bachelor of Dentistry with Honours from the University of Sydney in 2006. He commenced working in private practice with a special interest in Periodontics and held a teaching position at the University of Sydney within the discipline of Oral Surgery. During this time he also obtained a prestigious Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons by examination.

After 7 years in general practice he decided to pursue his interest in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry by undertaking full time specialist training, graduating with a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Periodontics).

He is a registered specialist in Periodontics and has lectured locally and nationally on the prevention and treatment of periodontitis and peri-implantitis.

Dr Vo obtained his BDS dental degree from the University of Adelaide. He then went on to receive a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Periodontics from the University of Sydney, registering as a Specialist Periodontist with the dental board of Australia. Following the completion of his degrees, he was also awarded membership into the prestigious Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. Since then, Dr Vo has been awarded separate research grants in the fields of periodontology and craniofacial biology.

Working in private practice in Sydney since 2009, Dr Vo has also been a visiting clinical demonstrator for the DMD program at the University of Sydney. As an esteemed Periodontist, he holds membership with the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists and the International Team for Implantology. In addition, Dr Vo has been an invited speaker at conferences in Australia and lectures on topics including the advanced and latest concepts in the management of periodontal diseases.

Dr Meredith Owen received an honours degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Guelph before studying dentistry at the University of Sydney. She graduated with honours and was awarded the Henry Bruce Maxwell prize for restorative dentistry, an academic merit scholarship, and an alumni achievement honour for leadership and community engagement. She also obtained her Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Periodontics from the University of Sydney, and upon completion was awarded membership into the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

Dr Owen has been working in private practice since 2010 and currently resides and works in Newcastle, Australia. She is involved in teaching for the University of Sydney and was both a clinical educator and a mentor. She is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists, the Australian Society of Periodontology, and the International Team for Implantology.

Dr Paul McHugh graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1980. Initially, he worked in the RAAF as a serving Dentist before becoming the senior lecturer to the dental hygienist course and then commencing private practice. He returned to Adelaide University and became a registered periodontist in 1991. In specialist private practice in Adelaide, he started Adelaide Periodontics and Implant Professionals. Paul’s clinical and scientific interests are in the field of periodontal tissue regeneration, bone grafting and dental implants.

Paul has been actively involved with undergraduate and postgraduate training for dentists and dental hygienists and is a speaker for the ITI. He has served as chairman of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP), and Australian Society of Periodontology (ASP state and federal). Paul has received fellowships from the International Team of Implantology, The Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentistry

Deb is a Dental Hygienist with a Grad Dip in Restorative Dental Hygiene (Canada). She has worked in a variety of health care settings over the past 30 years in both hospital and private practices providing care in general dentistry, periodontics, orthodontics, TMJ and facial pain as well as medically compromised patients.

Deb holds a Cert IV TAE and is a qualified clinical supervisor and lecturer in Melbourne. She has provided training nationally to Oral Health Professionals in assisting their patients to QUIT smoking and is currently studying for her Masters in Clinical Teaching.

Dr Helen English completed her Masters in Periodontology with Distinction from the University of Otago in 2005, gaining her Royal Australasian College Fellowship that same year. She subsequently established Nelson Periodontics, the only private specialist periodontal and dental implant surgery practice in the top of the South Island of New Zealand.

Although full-time clinical practice is her primary interest, she maintains various research commitments and is a committee member of the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists, a member of the International Team of Implantology, and the Specialists’ Representative on the board of the NZDA. She has lectured at numerous conferences including the International Academy of Periodontology, ANZAP, NZDHA, NZAO meetings and the RACDS Convocation.

She has also been awarded a New Zealand Dental Research Foundation Grant to undertake specialist practice-based research into subgingival delivery devices for periodontitis lesions in conjunction with the University of Otago and the University of Zurich, Switzerland. She runs hands-on courses and lectures internationally for numerous organisations, including the Swiss Dental Academy, and is proud to be involved in continuing education for her colleagues.

Deb graduated from the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Vermont (USA) in 1995. She began her career in dentistry in 1987, working both administratively and clinically as a chairside assistant. Deb has a passion for clinical dental hygiene, but mostly a strong desire to make dental visits stress-free and even… fun! She truly believes ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’.

Originally from the state of Vermont, Deb settled in New Zealand in 2004, calling Picton her new home. Over that decade she practised in both Blenheim and Nelson.

Ron has been a lecturer in Dental Hygiene since 1986.

He started his career at the Dental Hygiene Program in Amsterdam at the Academic Centre of Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). He fulfilled a role as lecturer, pre-clinical and clinical coordinator, international coordinator and curriculum coordinator. He is the course coordinator of the Oral Health Science Course of La Trobe University in Bendigo (since 2012). He supported the development of the Dental Hygiene Education in Nepal (curriculum advisor and providing didactical and technical training) and managed an Oral Health Promotion Training Centre in Nepal. He completed his PhD in 2018. His thesis is a historical analysis of the introduction of the dental hygiene education in Nepal and describes how issues of professionalism between oral health care providers and limited access to preventive care are barriers to achieve better oral health for the whole population and not only the ‘happy few’.

In 2013 he was the recipient of the prestigious Andrew Heiskell Award, for innovation in international education. In 2015 he received recognition for his work in Nepal through a Social Responsibility Award from the IFDH and the Global Child Dental Fund. In 2017 he received the Teaching and Learning Award from the La Trobe Rural Health School. Since October 2018 he also the Director of Learning and Teaching of the La Trobe Rural Health School in Bendigo.
